Are supply chain emissions considered in the research?
The study (Climate neutral livestock production – A radiative forcing-based climate footprint approach) assessed emissions associated with farming, downstream supply chain emissions were not included.
Emission sources included:
- The animals themselves
- Fertilizer use
- Electricity and diesel/petrol use
- Manure management
- Supplementary feeding.
The study focused on sheep meat production in Australia. As livestock production systems vary in different parts of the world, the results may not be indicative of systems elsewhere.
