How much water does it take to produce 1kg of beef?

The most current research shows that it takes 515 litres to produce 1kg of beef in Australia.

Three key contributing factors that determine water use in beef production in Australia include:

  1. the demand for irrigation water to grow pasture for cattle vs other agricultural commodities such as horticultural produce or cotton,
  2. the amount of free-flowing artesian bores in the rangelands, and
  3. availability of water for agricultural use compared to industrial and domestic uses.
