How much water does it take to produce 1kg of beef?
Over the past five years, livestock producers have reduced the water used in raising beef cattle by more than 5% to average 486 litres per liveweight kg. Since 1985 the industry has achieved a 65% reduction.
Factors contributing this reduction in water use include:
- a reduction in irrigation for pasture production
- capping free flowing artesian bores to reduce evaporative losses
- genetic and breeding programs to increase growth rates.
